Richard Wilkins

Richard Wilkins creates an easy place for listeners to relax on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 10am to 1pm on smoothfm.

Richard joined smoothfm in 2012 and is the winner of two Australian Commercial Radio Award (ACRA) awards for Best Music Special – firstly in 2013 for his John Farnham special, and again in 2015 for his co-host with Michael Bublé.

New Zealand born Richard made the move to Australia in 1980 with his band “Wilde and Reckless”. After playing every dive in the country, performing on ‘Countdown” and touring with Grace Jones, he had a brief stint in radio and on Satellite TV. In 1987 Richard landed his big break as the host of MTV Australia, helming the ground-breaking show through its six year run.

In 2006 Richard returned to the stage in “Grease: The Arena Spectacular’, winning acclaim for the role of Vince Fontaine. In 2010 he released two CDs “39 #1 Hits of the 1980’s” and “38 More Smash Hits From the 80’s” with both albums hitting the ARIA Top 20.

In September 2011 Richard released “Black Ties, Red Carpets, Green Rooms” documenting some of the amazing, bizarre and hilarious episodes of his illustrious career. The book was critically acclaimed, becoming publisher New Holland’s #1 best seller for the year.

His extraordinary career made him a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for ‘significant service to the community through a range of charities, and to the entertainment industry’ in 2014. In 2017 Richard celebrated 30 years at Channel Nine, as regular on the Today Show and Today Extra, as well as filing stories for A Current Affair, reporting for National Nine News, Ninemsn and a multitude of other outlets as the Nine Network’s Entertainment Editor.

Richard has interviewed the biggest stars in film and music including Billy Connolly, Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey, Robbie Williams, Britney Spears, Barbra Streisand, Paul McCartney, Barry Humphries, Neil Diamond, Elton John and Billy Joel.

Richard Wilkins is an ambassador for The Sony Foundation Australia, Dr Charlie Teo Foundation, Volvo, Ticketek and The Star, and earlier this year he welcomed his first grandchild from one of his five children, Isabella Rose.
